Now that October is almost over it is time to make reading plans for November! Most of the time I fail at making a monthly TBR because well I always buy new books and immediately want to read them..

Let’s just make a little goal for ourselves and say we will stick to our TBR this month. Sounds like a good plan right?

Alright here we go, my TBR for November.

1. Throne of glass (reread)

Caleana Sardothien, young woman assassin, is betrayed and sentenced to the salt mines of Endovier. After a year, however, she is given an opportunity: If she wins a contest to become the king's champion, she will be granted a four-year contract, working as an assassin for the empire she hates, at the end of which time she will be freed

2. Crown of midnight (reread)

Since this is the sequal to throne of glass i am not telling you what it is about because spoilerssss.

3. Heir of fire (reread)

Same goes here not telling because of spoilers

4. Queen of shadows

And again not telling because of spoilers! Stop pushing me! (just joking haha)

5. Heartless

Possessed of an astounding gift for baking, Cath dreams of breaking free of the dull aristocratic round of balls, tea parties and social niceties that makes up her life, and instead opening the finest bakery in all of Hearts. Unfortunately, Cath has caught the eye; or rather the pallet, of Hearts’ foolish and ineffective king and Cath’s mother the domineering Marchioness wants nothing more than her daughter to be Queen. This situation is further complicated when Cath finds herself captivated by Jest, the Kings’ new Court Joker. Yet the Joker is not all that he seems, and outside the narrow circle of court other forces are at play, forces that emanate from the near mythical country on the other side of the looking glass, the magical land known as Chess.

6. Red queen

Red queen is the second book in the Chronicles of Alice. There for I’m only telling you what the first book is about.

In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blond, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place. Just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood…

Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful.

And to find the truth, she will have to track this beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.

7. Rebel Spring

In a land where magic has been forgotten and peace has reigned for centuries, unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms battle for power… A princess must journey into enemy territory in search of a magic long-thought extinct. A rebel becomes the leader of a bloody revolution. A Sorceress discovers the truth about the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield. It's the eve of war. Each must choose a side. Kingdoms will fall.

What are your reading plans for November?
Let me know!

So for today I have the long awaited post How I rate my books! Okay maybe not really the awaited post.. but I thought it would be fun to share it with you guys!

A lot of people rate books differently. For some people, 3 stars is pretty good, but for other it is rather poor. Some reviewers give out 5 stars more readily than others. I have made a rating scale for myself.

My rating scale:
5 Stars = THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING.
4 Stars = BOOK WAS CLOSE TO BEING EVERYTHING.
3 Stars = I really enjoyed this book, but it just didn't blow me away.
2 Stars = This book was pretty bad.
1 Stars = I actually don't give out 1 stars, but when i do it is probably because I did not finish the book.

I have to say that I’m not very fast disappointed in a book so I give a lot of books 4 or 5 stars. However this year (2018) I decided to be a little bit more critical with my ratings. This is because I found that when I wanted to write a review I suddenly had a few things that I didn’t like. Because of this the rating wasn’t right anymore.

I give a book 3 stars when I’m not really sure how to feel about the book. This is beginning to happen a lot more than it used to. I think that this has to do with the fact that I have read a lot more books. And there for not every story is unique anymore.

Next the 2 star rating. This does not happen a lot. But sometimes it does. These are you just the books that really did not enjoy and had a hard time finishing it.

Following up on that we have the 1 star books. As you can read in my rating scale it is most likely that I did not finish the book. In the past I just couldn’t DNF a book! But lately I decided that if I “hate” a book I will just put it down. Most of the times if I keep reading those books it will get me in a reading slump.

Title: The Book thief
Author: Markus Zusak
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Pages: 558
Date read: 17 October 2018
Format: Paperback

Set in Germany in the years 1939-1943, The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, narrated by Death who has in his possession the book she wrote about these years. So, in a way, they are both book thieves. Liesel steals randomly at first, and later more methodically, but she's never greedy. Death pockets Liesel's notebook after she leaves it, forgotten in her grief, amongst the destruction that was once her street, her home, and carries it with him.

Liesel is effectively an orphan. She never knew her father, her mother disappears after delivering her to her new foster parents, and her younger brother died on the train to Molching where the foster parents live. Death first encounters nine-year-old Liesel when her brother dies, and hangs around long enough to watch her steal her first book, The Gravedigger's Handbook, left lying in the snow by her brother's grave.

I read this book for the first time in 2017 and I absolutely loved it! But since I started reading a bit more critical this year I decided to give it a reread and see what I think about it now. And it was just as beautiful as the first time! Let me explain you my thoughts.

First of all, the writing in this book is just beautiful. I can't even. I love the way this book is written. The choice to have it narrated by Death is quite an interesting one. The first time I read the book, it was a bit confusing to me at first, and it's the type of choice that could have become very gimmicky. Zusak made quite a risky decision there, but ultimately I think it was a great decision. Death's narration somehow manages to be not too overpowering; after all, most of the story is focused on Liesel. But it also is an important factor of the narration that doesn't get forgotten.

Now let’s talk about the characters. I could list every single character in the book and talking about how wonderful they are, and how the characterization of every single one of them is so amazing and wonderful, but I am afraid that this review would be way to long. Basically, the characters in this book are just phenomenal.

Over all, the book just has such a powerful message and I recommend everyone to read it!

It occurs to me that I absolutely do not highlight my favorite books enough.

And since 90% of the books that i read are fantasy, i thought it would be perfect to make a top 5 favorite fantasy book series.

I have been reading fantasy books for as long as I can remember. I remember that when I started reading it felt like I could escape the real world ( I know it might sound kind of lame…). And since then I just couldn’t stop reading them!

The books are in random order.

So here we go!

1. Eon by Alison Goodman

This series actually got me by surprise. I heard about it once and I was like yeah it sounds interesting, so I read it and it was amazing!

For years, 16-year-old Eon has been training to be a Dragoneye apprentice, a coveted position in which the student serves as the conduit between energy dragons and the human world. Eon's whole way of life is cloaked in secrecy and danger, however, because Eon is actually Eona--a girl forced by necessity to live her life as a boy. If her secret were discovered, her life would be danger, as well as the lives of those around her. To make impossible odds even more impossible, Eona is also crippled, so the deck is very much stacked against her. But on the day the apprentices are chosen, it is revealed that Eona has the unusual ability of seeing all the energy dragons, not just one--and she is chosen by the powerful Mirror Dragon, a being that has not been seen in hundreds of years.

2. A court of thorns and roses by Sarah J Maas

Do I even need to explain this one? I mean come on Rhysand?!?!

Feyre is a human girl who, after unwittingly killing a faerie, must pay the ultimate price. A man-beast soon appears on her doorstep, demanding that she accompany him to his faerie homeland—where she'll live with him forever as payment for slaying one of his own. This is an issue because A) the human-faerie conflict is steadily intensifying, and B) Feyre is the caregiver to her destitute father and two bratty sisters. What will happen to her once she’s in enemy territory? What will happen to her family?

3. Chaos walking by Patrick Ness

Todd Hewitt is about to become a man. He was told that there are no woman, because they were all killed off. One day, when he's out with his dog, Manchee, he finds a spot where there is no noise. Surely, he thinks, this is impossible. Soon he is confused further, when his parents tell him he must leave his town, Prentisstown, and venture to a new town. He never thought other towns existed.

4. Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

This also needs no explanation and probably I also do not need to explain what it is about right?

5. Study by Maria V. Snyder

Yelena is waiting to be executed and she's made peace with that, but then the Commander's right hand (who also happens to be an assassin) approaches her with an offer; she can either be executed as planned or she can become the Commander's new food taster. Yelena naturally picks the latest and she's introduced into a world of politics, schemings and poisons, and she eventually has to face her worst nightmares and find the strength to confront them.

I probably have more favorites but I did not include them because I have not finished them yet (oops). I might make another post about series I keep saying I will finish.

If you have a lot books like me then sometimes you just don’t know what to read next. There for I use a TBR jar. A TBR jar what is that? well to say it very simple it’s just a jar filled with all of your unread books.  And when you don’t know what to read you take a piece of paper out of the jar and the book that comes out is your next read!

You can also choose to put challenges in the jar. For example: read a graphic novel or reread a favorite book.

Do you want make a TBR jar yourself? Then keep on reading!

Step 1: go on a treasure hunt!

Find a jar or a bowl or a bag, just something to put the pieces of paper in.

Step 2: time to be crafty!

this step is optional but if you want, you can decorate it with washi tape, ribbons or put a photo of your cat on it. Just be creative!

For my TBR jar I decided to not decorate it because now I can see how many pieces of paper are in the jar and stress about it… yeah I might need to decorate it.

Step 3: write, write, write and write…

It’s time for the worst thing about making a TBR jar… and that is writing all of your books down on a piece of paper. You heard me right ALL of them. I used scrapbook paper so that there is some color in the jar.

Step 4: time to be dangerous.

After you wrote them down it’s time to cut them out. Watch out for your fingers! You can cut them any way you want. I cut them in strips that are about 1 cm high and 15 cm long.

Step 5: fold, fold, fold and fold..

When you cut them all out, it’s time to fold them ALL. I folded them in half and then again in half. In the beginning of my TBR jar I folded them in little stars but it took a lot of time and to unfold them was hell. But do whatever you want just be creative with it!

Step 6: DONE! Be proud of yourself!

Now put all your pieces of paper in the jar and you are DONE! And when you buy a new book just at it to the TBR jar.

The real struggle of a bookworm is what to read next. We all have experience this; standing in front of your bookshelf and you are screaming.. you don’t know what to read next! The horror!! But do not worry I’m here to help you and limit the screaming in front of your bookshelf.

So today I’m just going to hit you with a list to help you get rid of the horrors.

1.     MAKE A TBR JAR WHICH IS SO FAIR AND EQUAL TO ALL BOOKS AND LET’S FACE IT, THE JAR IS CUTE.

I love my TBR jar, but do I use it a lot… uhh let’s not talk about that. the downside of a TBR jar is that most of the time you know exactly which book you don’t want to read and of course you always get that one.

2.      ASK YOUR BOOKISH FRIENDS, I MEAN WERE ELSE ARE YOUR FRIENDS FOR, RIGHT?

Go on instagram and make a poll! choose 2 books and let the best one win. The best part about this is that you get personalized recommendations, at least most of the time. The downside with this is that you most of the time have a favorite and then the other one wins.

3.     PICK THE FIRST BOOK THAT CATCHES YOU ATTENTION. YOU ARE DRAWN TO IT SO WHY NOT READ IT?

When I stand in front of my bookshelf to pick my next read, I often have a book that lightly catches my attention but then I think about and I’m like, mehh. And then I keep looking further and forget about that book. But why? I mean it got my attention so why not read it.

4.     JUST GO WITH THE MOOD AND LET GO OF THAT MONTHLY TBR!

Every month you make a TBR, and then halfway through the month you don’t feel like it anymore. So you just keep staring at it, and hope that it magically changes. STOP DOING IT! Just go for what you feel like nobody will blame you!

5.     READ THE OLDEST BOOK ON YOUR TBR PILE, AND YOU CAN ALSO SAY THAT YOU FINALLY READ IT!

I think that every bookworm out there can relate to this. You have a huge TBR pile and some books have been sitting there for ages. So why not read it? Beside that you can also be proud of yourself because you finally read it!

Do you have a method for choosing your next read?
Let me know!

Title: This Is Where It Ends ( or in dutch: 54   Minuten)
Author: Marieke Nijkamp
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Pages: 320
Date read: 12 October 2018
Format: Paperback

My first thought on closing This Is Where It Ends could be summed up in three words.

"I'm not okay."

This Is Where It Ends is deeply, darkly visceral and gripping. It takes you by the throat and tugs you downward into emotional compromise and utter panic.

It’s the start of a new semester at Opportunity High School in Alabama, and the entire student body is assembled in the auditorium, to listen to the start-of-semester speech from the principal. When the assembly ends, they figure out that the doors are closed and cannot be opened. Then, someone starts shooting.

The story is told from the perspective of four different people, all connected to each other and to the shooter. I found it to be a very emotional and personal book, a very fast read, because once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. ( I might have read it in 3 hours)

I think the thing that hit me the hardest about This Is Where It Ends is that skillful blend of tragedy and hope, darkness and light.

Because of that, I just couldn’t put the book down. I just needed to find out more about the characters and what would happen in the end. I do believe that the author could have given more background into the teens lives and then lead into the event. With that, I also think that the author could have told a little bit more about the shooter. At some moments in the story it felt like the shooter didn’t really have a reason to why he is doing it.

This book, however, is a journey that has you in the edge of your seat and praying for all the characters involved.
