nerdybookreads

There are two things i love in my life, books and lists!

And as is common for this time of year, it’s time to talk about goals! I admit I actually really struggle to write goals because PRESSURE. But this year It was actually pretty easy. It must had been some kind of magic but that okay.

  • Read 90 books. For the first time in like 4 years I decided to set a bigger reading goal. Normally I would go for 80 books but let just be crazy this year! AM I RIGHT?
  • Participate in a read a thon. And succeed please!? I always wanted to participate in one but I’m always scared because I’m afraid I will fail.
  • Listen to 12 audiobooks. I love audiobooks! I REALLY DO! But for some weird reason I haven’t listen a lot of audiobooks in 2018. So let’s change that.
  • Reread harry potter. I am nothing if not PREDICTABLE. It’s just a tradition, okay.
  • Read more big books. I have a lot of big books on my TBR… and this year I just want to read them. Because I LOVE BIG BOOKS AND I CANNOT LIE! Hehe I had to say it I’m sorry.
  • Write more reviews. Since I started this blog I realized that I really love writing reviews so why not write more of them?
  • Reread 12 books. I’m actually addicted to this rereading thing but this will be a challenge!
  • Finish reading 10 series. How do you mean ambitious? No but really I NEED TO FINISH READING SOME SERIES. It is getting out of hand.
  • Read poetry books. In 2018 I read my first poetry book and I fell in love. So in 2019 I want to read more of them.
  • Read a classic. Me being a bookworm should have read a classic by now… well I HAVE NOT.. so in 2019 I want to read at least 1 classic.
  • Unhaul some books. You read it right! I want to unhaul some books this year. Why? Well I have a lot of books on my shelves that for example I have not finished reading. What is the reason to keep them if I hated it? And might need some space…
  • Becoming a wizard. This does not need a explanation.

Beside those reading goals i'm also going to start a little project. i was looking at my shelfs the other day and i have to admit they are FULL. so i came up with a idea i'm goig to reread every book that i did not finish this year and if i stll don't like them i am going to get rid of them. YOU READ THAT RIGHT i am getting rid of some books in 2019.

I will keep you guys updated by every wrap up.

What are your 2019 goals??!
How many books are you planning to read?

Time to change things up

If you know me than you’ll know that I read the same kind of books all the time. I’m a YA reader and it rarely ever happens that I read something else than that. One of my resolutions, that just came to me in these last couple of days is to read some other books this year. Don’t get me wrong, YA is a wonderful genre and I won’t stop reading it, but I guess I just want to broaden my horizon and read some other things alongside YA books.

This year I decided that I want to read more poetry. I read my first poetry book in 2018 and I felt head over heels in love with it. Beside that it is nice to get a break once in a while from all those stories and just read something “easy”.

I also want to read more adult fantasy. Don’t get me wrong I love YA fantasy but sometimes I get the feeling that I am reading the same story over and over again. DON’T GET ANGRY AT ME! So for getting a little variation in that I want to read more adult fantasy. With that I have to say that I enjoy the world building way more in adult fantasy than in YA fantasy.

I guess we will see what 2019 brings me.

Title: This monstrous thing
Author: Mackenzi Lee
Rating: 3/5 stars
Pages: 384
Date read: 6 January 2019
Format: Paperback

“He wasn’t broken anymore. But he was still dead.”

Alasdair Finch is a Shadow Boy. He knows how to use clockwork parts to make mechanical limbs for people. When his brother dies, he does the incredible - he brings Oliver back to life. But Oliver is no longer who he used to be.

Set in an alternate version of nineteenth century Geneva, This Monstrous Thing is inspired on Frankenstein. Frankenstein is based on Alasdair, who resurrects his brother in an act of desperation. Additionally, there is a tension between the populace of Geneva and the people who have mechanical limbs. They are seen as less than human, abominations, monstrous. If they would find out about Oliver, who is more mechanical than human, they would kill him.

I have to say the author did a creative job at retelling the story. I loved the steampunk parts it in and the story definitely tells its own story, with a different look on everything and with the characters.
I did like reading about the character. Most of all the relationship between the brothers I really liked. But sometimes it felt like they could have been better developed in the story.

While there were many elements in the story that I enjoyed This Monstrous Thing never stood out for me. While the setting is historical, I found that it was hard to tell sometimes. They use a lot of modern language and the settings aren’t well explained there or you don’t get that historical feeling.

There isn’t something very bad about this book but it was just not my cup of tea.

Today I’m sharing with you 19 books i want to read in 2019. Every year I make a list of books that I really want to read in that year I guess you can call it a reading bucket list. Now I have to say that I don’t always stick to this list.. what a surprise Sanne.. and beside that through the year more books are added on the list. Because let’s be real there are always amazing books coming out.

That’s enough talking let’s get to the books I want to read 2019.

* disclaimer, not every book had a reason to be on this TBR

1. Obisido
I think that is finally time to finish this series. Even though it makes me sad that it will be over ( probably the reason why I haven’t finished it yet)

2. The hate u give
What can I say I’m just always late to the hype. Also I have been putting this off because of the hype.. I’m always scared to read something with so much hype around it.

3. The merciless
I will probably save this for Halloween. It just seems like the perfect book for Halloween.

4. the cruel prince
Yes I know.. another book were I’m late to the hype.

5. The Dragonbone Chair
I found this book at a second hand store. And the problem with second hand stores and me is that I always buy a lot of books and then never read them. Let’s not let this happen with this one.

6. lost boy
The be honest I bought this book by mistake… I thought that it belonged to a series but I was wrong it was a standalone book. But it still sounds amazing so I’m just going to read it.

7  & 8 shadow of night and book of life
I loved a discovery of witches but somehow I keep putting off the rest of the series. This year I’m going to finish this amazing series ( I hope)

9. the girl on the train
I have been so scared to read this book. I heard so many mixed reviews about it that I have very low expectations for it.

10. storm glass

11. traitor to the throne
Not long ago I read Rebel of the sands and I really LOVED it so I couldn’t wait to pick up the second book. But then I never did so here it is on this HUGE TBR list.

12. childeren of blood and bone

13. the demon king

14. girl of fire and thorns

15. graceling

16. vicious
Last year I finally decided to buy it! But now I need to make sure that I also read it!

17. Jonathan strange and mr. norrel
One of my goals for 2019 is to read more big books. me being me I of course had to pick one of the biggest book I one. I MEAN THIS THING HAS 1000+ PAGES.

18. carve the mark

19. Magician
Another second hand bookstore buy… so yeah let’s not keep this unread.

Before I start with this post… HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!! Now on to the post.
As if my TBR pile couldn’t hate me anymore…
I know! I know! I have so many books to read for the first time. But as much as I feel guilty for neglecting the TBR…I freaking love rereading. It’s like revisiting an old friend.
This year I want to reread A LOT of books but for now I’m only going to give you the 5 books that I am most excited about!

1. the name of the wind by…

What has it been 2 years since I read it ?!? I my opinion WAY TO LONG! I remember loving this book so much but I never got to read the second book but since I have that in my possession right now, it is a damn good reason to FINALLY reread this beauty!

2. the hunger games by …

I remember loving the  hunger games but I wonder if I still like it as much as I did back then. Let’s find out in 2019!

3. a discovery of witches

I read  the first book last year and I loved it! And now that there is a TV show of it ( that I really need/want to watch) I decided that I’m going to reread the first book and then read the rest of the series.

4. poison study

So recently I found out that this series has more than 3 books!?!?! So I find that a GREAT reason to reread the first 3 books and then read the rest of the series.

5. ember in the ashes

I have to be very honest here… I seriously can’t remember a thing about this book ..oops.. that means it is time for a reread right? RIGHT?

‘’winter is the perfect season to read some big books”

Everywhere around me I see people making seasonal TBR’s so me being me I want to try it too. But it wouldn’t be me If I changed it a little bit right? So I’m making a seasonal Winter TBR with the theme BIG BOOKS.

To be extra ambitious I choose 10 big books to read this Winter!

Let’s see if I can stick with this.

1, 2 & 3 Illuminae, Gemina & Obsidio
A year ago I read the first t books and never got around to read the third one. So I guess it’s time to FINALLY finish the Illuminae files series.

4, 5 & 6 a Discovery of witches, Shadow of night & Book of life
In 2018 I read a Discovery of witches and I LOVED IT! But Then That Thing Happened Where I Never Read The Rest Of The Series… let’s change that!

7. Traitor to the throne
Not long ago I read Rebel of the sands and I really LOVED it so I couldn’t wait to pick up the second book. So here it is on this beautiful TBR list.

8. children of blood and bone
The reason for this one? I’m just ALWAYS late when it comes to hyped books.

9. house of the night 1 & 2
I have a bind up of the first two books that’s why it is so huge. This one has been on my shelf for what feels like forever. I just want to get it of that shelf to be honest

10. this monstrous thing
Okay, I know that this isn’t a big book. But I still really want to read it. So let’s just pretend that this is a huge book okay? OKAY?

FEEL THE FEAR! * scary music playing

There are many things that bookworms are afraid of. Okay, so non-bookworms may be rolling their eyes at me right now, but book addicts like myself have plenty of fears.

Today I’m going to share with you 5 of the biggest bookworms fears.

1. Spilling your tea over your book. Blow dryers are your best friends guys! GET THAT BOOK DRY! unless you were using an e-reader… well then you are SCREWED.

2. losing your place. Some bookmarks are strong, others are slippery, and sometimes if you are like me you just drop your book because you are clumsy.

3. Cover change. HOW THE HELL IS THIS LEGAL?!?!

4. ANYONE interrupting your reading time. It's obviously a therapeutic time of your day and anyone who doesn't understand that obviously wants the world to burn. WHEN MY BOOK IS OPEN YOUR MOUTH IS CLOSED!

5. Your favorite character dies. you'll never crawl out of the deepest pits of despair over the death of your favorite character. How are you expected to recover from something so real and painful?

what are your biggest reading fears?
Let me know in the comments!

Being a bookworm is hard…
Bookworms face a ton of struggles as we all know. But do you realize just how many decisions we’re forced to make ALL THE TIME as well?!? So much. So many. Today I’m going to hit you with a small list of all the decisions we have to make.

1. What book to buy next or do you borrow it from the library?!? SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM

2. what edition do you buy? Hardcover, paperback or maybe a audiobook?!? And with that comes what cover edition do you want.. THE STRUGGLE!

3. The horror of choosing what to read next… SO MANY BOOKS!

4. What star rating are you going to give it? Are you going to review it?

5. the hardest question of them all… WHERE DOES IT FIT ON YOUR SHELVES?!?

6. Are you going to reread the book? Or is it a onetime read?

Let me know in the comments what you think is the hardest decision to make.

With winter just around the corner it is time get a cozy blanket and a hot cup of tea. There is only one thing missing… A BOOK. Today I am going to give you a list of 5 books to read during the winter.( you know I love making lists!)

1. Harry potter
I personally love to read Harry Potter when it is winter. The book are so cozy and give me such a happy feeling.

2. Lunar chronicles
What is better than a fairytale retelling on a cold day?

3. The shining
Most people would say that this fits better in fall. But me? No I think it fits perfect in winter because of the setting. I mean empty hotel on a hill covered in snow… what else do you want ?

4. uprooted
This book just has that magical feeling that you are looking for in December!

5. Shiver
I don’t think you can legally make a list of  books about winter without talking about Stiefvater’s The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. I think you get sent to book jail.

For as long as I can remember I always had that mind set of a book has to stay perfect. Using sticky notes or even write in books was a crime in my mind. But lately I saw a lot of people annotating their books,  And I thought to myself; my, how gorgeous do they look! It’s obvious the person who’s read it must have obviously enjoyed it! And it also seemed so handy for writing reviews. And in that moment I thought why can’t I do it? A book doesn’t have to stay perfect, a book should look like it has been read!
So I annotate my books now.
Okay, hang on, before you get all “OMG monster!! Satan!!!! I bet you dog ear your pages, too!!!”, let’s take a deep breath and calm down.
Let me explain.
First of all I do not dog ear my pages! ( I did do it when I was younger tho..) I hate doing it and since I have lots of bookmarks I do not see the point. Also I do not write in my books. But I do have a notebook where I write my thoughts of the books I am reading.
Writing in a book can be very useful but since there isn’t a lot of space to write I use sticky notes and just stick them in the page.( I just can’t seem to write small haha)
Like I mentioned earlier I use a note book to get my thoughts out. In there I write things like quotes that really got me or I write something like the story is going slow. This really helps me with writing reviews. I just have to grab my note book and I can start typing.
Beside the note book I also use tabs. Every tab color means something:
Pink = something that love
Yellow = something funny or something  that made me laugh/smile
Blue = something sad
Green = something that got me by surprise or something I don’t know how to feel about
Orange = Quotes
Do I annotate my books in an extreme way? No. But I like doing it.
In the past I could get so paranoid if something happened to my book. I could be sad and angry about it all day. And now that I think of it, it’s all a little extreme. I love books, and I have fun when I read, but it’s not fun being so paranoid about my books not being perfect that I get nervous bringing them places.
I am very happy that I made this decision! I really enjoy reading more now. And with that being said, it’s time to find a cozy spot and read!

1. Are there any books you started this year you need to finish?

Not really, mostly I always finish the book that I started.

2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition to the end of the year?

I didn’t make a seasonal TBR this year. But the book I’m going with is This monstrous thing.

3. Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Not for this year.

4. What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

Can I only choose 3?!? Okay, let’s stick to the rules for once. I hope to read Wonder , This monstrous thing and Gathering darkness before the end of the year.

See I can stick to the rules.

5. Is there a book that you think could still shock you and become your FAVORITE???

That’s hard to say.. I don’t really look at a book and think OMG THIS BOOKS IS GOING TO BE EVERYTHING! So to be honest I really don’t know.

6. Have you already made reading plans for 2019?

HELL YES!!

Some of my reading goals for 2019 are:
Complete 5 series
Read a different genre
Read 90 books

I will make a whole different post about my reading goals for 2019.
december 06, 2018 No reacties

It’s December already, time flies guys! Which also means we’re closer to Christmas, yay!

My reading plans for December aren’t very big (at least for me). The reason for this? Well I am rereading Harry potter!! Even though I am rereading Harry Potter I still want to read other books as well (okay maybe this TBR is getting big after all).

I really hope that I can reread harry potter this year since last year I failed at it. DON’T JUDGE ME!

The book I want  to read in December:

The Harry Potter series
To kill a kingdom
This monstrous thing
Destined for an early grave

What are your reading plans for December?
